1. Test Your Internet Connection
Always test your internet connection and audio before going live, as reliable as your internet provider may be, things like weather and area outages happen. You can easily run your browser through a speed test to verify your connections.
2. Test your speaker & microphone
- Open a zoom meeting and select the arrow next to the microphone.
- Select Test Speaker & Microphone.
- Follow the prompts to select and test your speakers.
- Next, Follow the prompts to select and test your microphone.
- Once you’ve finished the testing, click finish and close the window.
3. Open your room early.
Just like in a studio, it is strongly recommended you start and end class on time. You can do this by opening your meeting at least 10 minutes early. Doing so allows you ample time to check for Zoom updates, your internet connection, and audio & video settings. Once you are all set, allow yourself time to settle and center before leading your class.
4. Select ‘speaker view’ & mute all participants during class.
When you are ready to begin your class, check that your screen is on Speaker View and that all participants are muted (option for you to mute all by clicking on “Manage Participants” and selecting “mute all”). This helps maintain a focused class setting should you have students arrive late. You can also choose which video to keep the focus on by selecting “Spotlight Video”. This ensures that your instructional video remains at the forefront of the meeting, even if others are speaking or accidentally making distracting sounds (which would normally pull the focus to them).
5. Use quality camera and microphone
Your students will be relying heavily one your verbal cues and demos. It will undoubtedly be a much more fulfilling experience for your students and for you by investing in some equipment that will provide quality sound and video. After many trial and errors we are definitely thankful for the Samson Go Mic Mobile and Logitech web cam.
6. Stream music from your computer through Zoom
You can stream music directly from your computer into your Zoom class so your students are hearing high-quality music without having to use another device to play, for example, Spotify. Many people are playing music from external speakers but the sound comes across distorted and could end of being more of a distraction than anything else. By using the sound sharing option, your students will be able to simply RSVP to your class and roll out their mats without the hassle of setting up music. This also saves you time and is even reminiscent of a studio vibe where everyone flows together! Below are a few steps to share your music through Zoom.
- Start or join a meeting
- Click the “Share Screen” button in the bottom toolbar
- At the bottom left corner select “Share computer sound“
- Select “Advanced” at the top of the window and then select “Music or Computer Sound Only”
- Finalize by selecting “Share” at the bottom right corner
